Shifting is an exploit used to delay attacks and hide their animations. Players could then run up to an enemy and release their attack, hiding it within the sprint animation.

Overview[]

Shifting could be used with nearly any weapon in the game, but it was most often used on melee weapons and as the infected in Quarantine.  Since the attack animation for the weapon stopped, shifters looked as though they merely ran into people and killed them. Shifting was also reported to increase the range of melee weapons in general.

Shifting was finally addressed on June 20, 2011, in the State of the Game Address. It was patched the first time, but affected grenades (players could no longer pull the pin from a grenade and run) - so it was undone. The 11-21-13 Content Update patched it more manageably.

...the Combat Arms Team considers shifting to be an illegitimate play tactic. We’re currently working on a way to eliminate the bug that allows it, but until that time, melee shifting will be considered a bannable offense.

Miscellaneous[]

It is still possible to use this exploit easily with a sniper, shotgun, or any other slow firing weapon such as a revolver (or even an M32). Doing so causes two shots to have less time in between them, allowing for a two unscoped sniper shots, two shotgun blasts to occur very closely between each other, etc. If you're lucky, you might even be able to get it to work with anything, including weapons with an extremely high rate of fire like the UZI, however it's not really possible to be consistent with it.

Grenade Shifting[]

Grenade shifting is a technique used in Quarantine Regen, often by free runner, to delay the animation of throwing a grenade. It is done when someone pulls a pin of the grenade and sprints which makes it look like their only sprinting. The player then releases shift which throws the grenade while the zombie is unaware of it because the animation never took place. This is quite annoying for zombies as they rely on visually seeing the animation of the nade being thrown. It is not considered bannable by Nexon, which encourages people to do it even more.

Trivia[]

  • Common weapons for shifting included the M9 , Sickle, Ninjato, Tracker Knife, Dom Pedro Sword and the Kukri, or any other long ranged and double swing weapons.
  • Shifting was generally more accepted in melee only than in Quarantine Regen.
  • The most common NX Melee weapon to shift with was the Tracker Knife, while the most common GP Melee weapon was the Sickle.
  • People generally don't get kicked for Grenade Shifting, although, it is possible.
  • As of November 21, 2013 update, it is no longer possible to melee shift as attempting to do so will result in the attack being cancelled.
