A group of noobs in their natural habitat.

A Noob is a slang term for a newcomer to online gaming or an Internet activity.

It can also be used for any other activity in whose context a somewhat clueless newcomer could exist.

It can have derogatory connotations, but is also often used for descriptive purposes only, without a value judgment.

The word newbie is a variant of "new boy" or "new blood," which originated from British public school and military slang.

Before it entered popular discourse by way of the Internet, the term "newbie" was used among U.S. troops in the Vietnam War as a slang term for a new man in a unit or squad.

Online, the earliest reports of the word Noob being used came from the USENET newsgroup talk.bizarre circa 1981, though in the form of "newb." While the spelling of noob eventually downgraded to its current simplistic state, the word Newb was given a completely different meaning.

Literal definitions

The precise definition of a noob varies from player to player, so one person's perspective of a noob may be totally different from another's. One can be called a noob for almost any reason at all, but here are just a few :

Using weapons that are considered overpowered. Some examples may be the TPG/TRG, WA 2000 series. Another prime example of being called a noob is with a 'bunny hopping P90' with speed gear on.

Using tactics that are considered unfair, such as spawncamping.

Being accused of hacking.

Newbs, or newbies, are players that have recently started to play, and thus perform badly due to low experience with the game in question. This sincere term is closer to the root of "newbie" than noob is.

  • There is no possible way of being "noob-proof", since everyone has their own individual preferences. Simply try to avoid fights and stay on people's good sides.
